IMPORTANT NAIL FAQ

NAIL DO'S AND DONT'S

  • Avoid soaking your nails in water, especially for prolonged periods of time and especially hot tubs, baths, etc. Press on nails are not identical to professionally applied gel or acrylic nails and therefore, if not applied correctly, may be more prone for moisture to become trapped between your nail bed and the fake nail.
  • Water droplets can easily become trapped between the fake nail and your natural nail. The longer your press on nails stay on, the more likely they begin to lift off your natural nail, which allows for moisture to settle in. If this does not dry properly, a nail fungus could develop.
  • If you have flat nail beds and find it difficult to glue on your press ons, you may consider removing them within 5-7 days or sooner, to avoid any trapped moisture from settling in and not drying. Please make sure you remove your nails safely and without force. See below for more details on safe nail removal.
  • If your hands are consistently in water, i.e. washing dishes by hand for more than a few minutes at a time multiple times throughout the day, do not leave your nails on for too long, i.e. no more than 5 days. Exact number of days will vary from person to person and depending on their experience with press on nails or acrylic nails. Once again, please make sure you remove your nails safely and without force. See below for more details on safe nail removal.
  • Wear with care! Yes, press ons are less damaging than acrylics however you still need to be mindful of the above. Nail fungus is also common with acrylic and gel nails, especially if left on for too long. You won't always feel a fungus developing, so it's important to inform yourself.

WHAT ARE PRESS ON NAILS?

Press on nails are fake nails that can easily be applied at home by using the provided application kit. They look just like a salon acrylic manicure except they're DIY! They are easier to remove than acrylic or gel nails and non-damaging if used correctly. The press on nails can also be removed and reapplied as needed. If you choose, you can also paint over them yourself.

HOW DO PRESS ON NAILS WORK?

Follow the instructions provided in your application kit. Simply put, on your clean, buffed natural nail apply a dash of glue and press on the nail that fits. It's that simple!

HOW DO I KNOW MY SIZE?

Check out the size guide to select the sizing that's right for you. A LA PRESSED nail sets come in pre-sized nail sets so if you require a specific size please specify this in a custom order form.
Please keep in mind custom orders may require a longer processing time.

MEASURING YOUR NAILS

  • The most accurate nail measuring method is use tape over your nail, mark the edges of your cuticles on each side and use the piece of tape against a ruler or measuring tape to get the exact width. You can watch this video tutorial here.
  • The order of the sizing numbers (0-9) does not correspond exactly to the order of your finger nail sizes.
  • For example: Sizes 0 to 4 do not equal to 0 for thumb, 1 for index finger, 2 for middle finger, 3 for ring finger and 4 for pinky finger. Thumb and pinky nails will be provided in an additional alternative size in your nail set.
  • The index, middle and ring finger nails tend to be similar in size and sometimes even interchangeable.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Follow the application process and apply the nails correctly in order to achieve best results and maximum wear time!
  1. Remove nail polish, glue, or other residue from your nails. Your nails must be clean prior to application.
  2. Use the alcohol pads provided to wipe nails clean.
  3. With the emery buffer, gently buff each nail so that it feels (slightly) roughened. The glue will stick to this surface as opposed to the natural, oily surface of your nail. Do this with each individual nail while getting as close to the cuticle as possible.
  4. Use the cuticle pusher and push back your cuticles as much as possible without causing pain or injury to your nail buds. Cut off extra dry skin around your cuticles if excessive.
  5. Apply a drop of glue to the centre of your nail. Do not use too much glue and avoid getting it on your cuticles or skin.
  6. Ensuring you have the correct nail size, apply the press on nail to your natural nail and hold in place for 10-15 seconds. If you did steps 1-5 correctly, you will feel it seal.
  7. If applied correctly, your press-on nails can last between 1-2 weeks.
TIP: Do not use too much glue, it's completely unnecessary and does not work!

WHAT ARE PEEL AND STICK TABS?

If you would like to wear your press ons for 1-2 days only, you can apply the set using the jelly peel and stick tabs provided in your kit instead of the nail glue.

IF A PRESS ON NAIL FALLS OFF...

If the press on nail is not broken, you can simply repeat steps 3 and 4. If there is excess glue stuck to the inside of the press on nail, gently buff that as well.

HOW TO SAFELY REMOVE PRESS ON NAILS

  • Do not pry off your nails, especially if applied within 24-28 hours. This will cause damage and rip off layers of your nail. Instead, apply cuticle oil around your cuticle, nail buds and under the nail.
  • Fill a bowl with hot water (not scalding hot so that it burns your skin) and add oil-infused body wash or a higher density oil such as olive oil or vegetable oil.
  • The more recent your press on nail application, the longer you should soak them. If the press on nails have been applied more than a week ago, you will notice them start to come off sooner.
  • Click here for a video tutorial on how to gently remove your press on nails without causing damage.
*Disclaimer: This video soley serves as an example and was not filmed by A LA PRESSED NAILS.

WILL THE PRESS ONS DAMAGE MY NATURAL NAILS?

  • Not if applied and removed correctly. The residue you will see remaining on your natural nails once the nails have been removed is the glue. The oil and water removal combination helps remove this excess residue during the removal process. You can gently buff it off.
  • A big bonus to press on nails is that they are far less damaging than salon applied acrylic, gel or poly gel nails and nail tips. You do not need to use an electric file to buff anything down. Just follow the removal steps indicated above and in the video for a clean and simple removal.
  • An important thing to take into consideration is the natural condition of nails. For example, if you have weak and brittle nails that do not grow easily or that peel and chip, then it is possible that even press on nails may cause some damage.
  • DISCLAIMER: DO NOT APPLY PRESS ON NAILS - or any fake nails such as acrylic or gel, if you have a developed nail fungus. This will prolong the healing process as any additional moisture that could become trapped between the nail bed and fake nail would only make the fungus grow.

HOW LONG WILL MY PRESS ON NAILS LAST?

  • That all depends on what you do with your hands on a day-to-day! If applied correctly, even with washing dishes every day and bathing your toddler, your press on nails should average between 5-7 days. Using rubber gloves to wash dishes and do other household chores will help prolong the nail wear.
  • If you're hands don't see as much water on a daily basis, then you can count on your press on nails sticking around well past the 7 day mark.
  • How long is too long? All depends on you and your day-to-day nail wear and tear! See above for important NAIL DO'S and DONT'S.

MY PRESS ON NAILS WON'T PRESS ON

  • When applying the press on nails, make sure that you follow the application instructions correctly. If you haven't buffed your nails and added too much glue, this could be a reason.
  • If you applied too much glue - you will know there is an excess amount glue if reaches your cuticles when you apply the press on nail - quickly remove the nail before the glue begins to set and dry, and use alcohol soaked paper towel or cotton ball to wipe it away.
  • Try the application process again, ensure that you've removed the previous glue or buffed it away and make sure that your nail is gently buffed and roughened.
  • Press down on the nail and keep it in place for at least 10 seconds or until you feel it seal.

WHAT IF THE PRESS ONS DON'T COME OFF?

  • Never forcefully remove the press on nails, especially prematurely.
  • As the glue slowly dissolves over time through wear and tear, the longer you wear your press on nails the easier the removal process will be. Be mindful, there is also such a thing as wearing them for too long. Your nails should remove without damage, if you follow proper removal procedure, around the 5 day wear mark.
TIP: You may find that the press on nails on your most dominantly used fingers, i.e. thumbs and index fingers, remove easier and faster than the rest of your nails. In this case, you may need to soak your ring finger and pinky nails for a little longer.
